In late September, the Phuket authorities begin a campaign to combat smoking in public places, hoping to make Phuket clean from tobacco smoke.
23 September on Phuket begins a campaign to combat smoking in public places. “The campaign is aimed at caring for the health of non-smokers,” commented the new project head of the municipality, Ms. Somyay Suvansuppana.

Phuket Mayor Ms. Somyei Suvansuppana:

The authorities of Phuket are concerned about the danger of cigarettes, especially passive smoking. Tobacco smoke forced to inhale non-smokers, including children. Tourists and residents of the Old Town will be freed from tobacco smoke, starting with the popular night market Lard Yai.
The new initiative relies on the 2017 Tobacco Control Act of the Year, which states that smoking in public places is prohibited. “The market is one of those places,” said Ms. Suvansuppana.

Mr. Don Limnapisit, President of Phuket Municipality:

Phuket’s Old Town is an important tourist destination. “We strive to make this place non-smoking every day, not only on Sunday evenings,” said Mr. Don at the presentation of a campaign to combat smoking.
The Anti-Smoking Foundation, state, public and private organizations support and join the anti-tobacco campaign in Phuket.

But in Pattaya, a ban on smoking in beach areas does not actually work. Because the authorities are liberal and are in no hurry to apply measures to violators.
In Pattaya, the ban on smoking, as well as many other decrees from above - the fight against motorists who skip a red light, the fight against tuk-tuk stopping anywhere, or street vendors who pour waste into sewage - actually do not work. Because city authorities do not enforce prohibitions and decrees.
The ban on smoking on city beaches entered into force on February 1. The authorities actively informed the public that the law would begin to be applied in Pattaya, and violators would receive heavy fines. However, in fact, compliance with the law in Pattaya was never ensured.
There are still cigarette butts on the city beach, the authorities are clearly not in a hurry to take measures to maintain cleanliness. There are many signs around the designated smoking areas, there are even half-full ashtrays, but there is no other effort from the authorities.
Deputy head of the city Vuthipol Charoenpol said that only the police are able to enforce the ban - by imposing fines on violators up to 100 000 baht. However, the municipality does not insist on the application of such tough measures, as this may adversely affect tourism. Although the dirty beach can also affect tourism negatively.
He noted that the police will allocate more people to patrol the beaches.
