The new EU Visa Code, which also includes simplifying the procedure for requesting and issuing short-term visas, was supported by the European Parliament. “For” was voiced by 428 by votes with 123 being “against”. The document has already been informally agreed with the Council of Ministers of the EU and should enter into force after its final approval by the Council.
According to TASS, referring to the press service of the Parliament, the changes in the Code will be applied six months after publication in the official EU newsletter. The reform provides for “simplification of the procedure for requesting and issuing short-term visas,” while the EU states that “it will use its visa policy to encourage non-EU countries to cooperate on migration issues”. Accordingly, visa fees, the time needed to make decisions on applications, and the duration of the validity of multiple entry visas “can be adjusted depending on whether the country that is not a member of the EU cooperates sufficiently or insufficiently readmission of illegal migrants. "
In general, the revised code will establish the procedures and conditions for issuing visas to citizens of more than 100 non-EU countries traveling to the EU for a short time (up to 90 days in any 180 day period). It should provide “simplification of procedures for bona fide travelers, which will be made in direct connection between visa and migration policies”. Visa requests may be submitted in advance six months (instead of the current three), as well as 15 days before the intended trip. The cost of the visa will increase to € 80.
